2-year-old girl, father shot in Downey; both in hospital
http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/los_angeles&id=8761473
DOWNEY, Calif. (KABC) -- Residents washed away any evidence of the violence that unfolded along a Downey sidewalk Friday, angry that a 2-year-old girl was caught in the crossfire.
The gunfire erupted in the middle of the afternoon along busy Telegraph Road in front of the victims' apartment complex around 4:30 p.m. Downey police say a 20-year-old man was shot 4 to 5 times. His toddler daughter, who was outside with him, was shot once.
"It appears that he may have shielded her at some point in time during the shooting. But at the onset of the gunfire, he was not holding her," said Downey Police Lt. Dean Milligan. "It seems like she may have come from behind at the time of the gunfire, and he may have turned to shield her as the gunfire erupted."
Investigators believe the shooting may have been gang related. According to police, the 20 year old got into to some sort of altercation at a corner store. He walked home, but was then called out to the street where the sole shooter opened fire.
Investigators say the gunman fled with at least three other suspects in a vehicle.
The father and daughter were rushed to the hospital. Friends say the little girl's father is not in a gang, and they can't believe an innocent child was hit.
"The thing I hate the most is that's my daughter's friend, that's a 3-year-old child. That's just sick you know," said David Ibarra, a friend of the victim.
The 2-year-old victim was awaiting surgery in stable condition Friday night. Her father remained in critical condition follwing his own surgery.
Police say a suspect was detained for questioning and they are also following up on substantial leads for the other suspects.

Liz Cambage Becomes First Woman To Dunk During Olympics Game
http://www.facebook.com/hoodnews247
Liz Cambage will always have a place in Olympics history after friday. Cambage, a center for Australia, became the first woman to ever rise up and throw down a dunk during Olympic play. That is certainly a great way to make a mark on the 2012 Summer Olympics.
At 6'8, Liz Cambage certainly has the height to throw down a rim rattling dunk and she took advantage of it. I am actually shocked that no woman dunked a ball before this. There had to have been a blow out where someone was able to go up during a fast break but I guess not.
This is quite a way to make a name for yourself at the Olympics. A lot of people probably had no idea who Cambage was but now she is going to be known. Dunking is still a big deal in women's basketball and it is always fun to watch. When it happens in a big game like this, it's even better.
Being the first in history to pull something off is a pretty special feeling. I do not think I have been the first to ever do anything, so I am only guessing on this. Dunking is pretty cool and being the first to do it in an Olympics game just has to feel amazing. Her teammates went wild and so did everyone who was watching the game. They were probably not expecting a dunk, which made it even better.
Liz Cambage will always be known as the first woman to throw down a dunk in the Olympics. Although she will probably not be the only person (cough, Brittney Griner, cough), she will always be the first one. That is a big deal, no matter which way you slice it.
NYPD will not back cop in Occupy Pepper-spray lawsuit
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/08/03/nypd-will-not-back-cop-in-occupy-pepper-spray-lawsuit/
The New York Police Department will not defend a 29-year veteran of the force being sued by Occupy Wall Street protesters, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The department's rare move means Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna could be personally liable for damages that are awarded to Chelsea Elliott of Brooklyn and Jeanne Mansfield of Massachusetts, who sued him and the NYPD in February, as well as the city and other unidentified officers.
The suit accuses the city of not training its officers correctly, following an incident in September where Bologna was caught on video pepper-spraying several protesters who had seemingly already been contained behind orange plastic netting. The run-in became an early flashpoint in the Occupy movement.
In October, Bologna was stripped of 10 vacation days for "using pepper spray outside of department guidelines." The women's attorney, Aymen Aboushi, said the visibility it gained after being posted online was reflected in the NYPD's distancing itself from Bologna.
"If it wasn't on video, I think it would be another he said-she said case," Aboushi said.
The NYPD Captains Endowment Association, of which Bologna is a member, will now cover the costs of his defense, but he is also asking the department to reverse its decision, according to his lawyer, Louis La Pietra.
"He wasn't doing this as Anthony Bologna, mister," La Pietra said. "He was doing this as Anthony Bologna, deputy inspector, NYPD."
A New York University report last month blasted the NYPD for escalating tensions and harassing protesters, lawyers and journalists during the early Occupy protests in Zuccotti Park last November.

Pakistani parents found guilty of murdering daughter because she was too "Westernized"
LONDON — The girl was murdered by her Pakistani parents for her Western ways. And it was her little sister who bravely told jurors how her mother and father suffocated the 17-year-old with a plastic bag — gripping testimony that led to her parents' murder conviction on Friday.
Justice Roderick Evans sentenced Iftikhar, 52, and Farzana Ahmed, 49, to life in prison for killing their daughter, Shafilea, in 2003. The couple — first cousins from the Pakistani village of Uttam — were ordered to serve a minimum of 25 years in prison.
"She was being squeezed between two cultures — the culture and way of life that she saw around her and wanted to embrace, and the culture and way of life you wanted to impose on her," Evans said during the sentencing at the Chester Crown Court in northwest England.
In Britain, more than 25 women have been killed in so-called "honor killings" in the past decade. Families have sometimes lashed out at their children on the belief that they have brought their household shame by becoming too westernized or by refusing a marriage.
Shafilea was only 10 when she began to rebel against her parents' strict rules, according to prosecutor Andrew Edis.
The young girl would hide make-up, false nails and western clothes at school, changing into conservative clothes before her parents picked her up.
But it was the last year of her life that proved to be the most traumatic.

Man calls 911 while being dragged by pickup truck
http://www.facebook.com/HoodNews247
TROY — Police on Tuesday released a frantic 911 tape of a man begging, and sometimes screaming, on his cellphone for help as he supposedly clings to the exterior of a Ford pickup driving through city streets.
But police also said the man was not dragged all the way from the Stewart's Shop on Fifth Street to the Walmart parking lot in Brunswick, as was earlier reported. He spent some of that time in the passenger seat and in the rear bed of the truck.
Robert Kowalik allegedly had an argument over a woman at 5:30 p.m. Sunday with an acquaintance, Seth Scudds, 45, of Simmons Road, Hoosick Falls. Despite the argument, Kowalik asked for a ride and was allowed to climb into the truck, police said.
But they argued as they drove, and Scudds told Kowalik to get in the back of the pickup.
Police said the argument continued and Scudds told the man to leave the truck. Kowalik realized he left a gym bag in the back that contained his medication.
Kowalik called police from Stewart's parking lot, but his conversation with the dispatcher was interrupted by his demands for his medication.
"I want my pills back," Kowalik says to someone in the vehicle as the dispatcher tries to interview him.
"My pills fell in my pocket," Kowalik says.
"What pills?" the dispatcher asks.
"My narcotics," Kowalik says.
"What's your name, sir?' the dispatcher asks.
A person in the background can be heard telling Kowalik to get out of the truck. At one point a woman cries out, "Ow, my foot." He repeats that he wants his pills, and it sounds like the truck accelerates. The woman says "Oh my ..." and the phone line goes dead.
Another dispatcher calls back at least twice. Kowalik answers on the second try and in a frantic voice tells the dispatcher he's at RPI.
"I'm holding onto the back of the truck. Hurry, hurry," he says.
"I'm at RPI. I got hit by a truck," he says.
"Are you attached to the truck?" the dispatcher ask.
"Yes," he says.
At one point, Kowalik screams, "He ran over my leg. He ran over my leg. I can't hold on much longer. He's killing me."
All the while, Kowalik tells dispatchers what streets or street corners he's passing as the pickup weaves through the city, cuts through the RPI campus to Hoosick Street and ends up in the Walmart parking lot in Brunswick. There, Scudds stopped, Kowalik got his bag and the driver took off, police said.
Kowalik told dispatchers that Scudds ran over a woman who was trying to help him in the parking lot, but Troy police Capt. John Cooney said that did not happen.
Cooney said the victim shared some responsibility for the incident, which he may have exaggerated, but Scudds, who was charged with assault and misdemeanor reckless endangerment, should have stopped.
Kowalik suffered cuts, bruises and other injuries and was treated and released, Cooney said.
Scudds, who was arrested at a home in Brunswick, was arraigned in city court Monday and is free on $7,500 bail.
He is scheduled to return to court on Friday.

Motel 6 guest greeted with racial slur on TV screen
http://www.facebook.com/HoodNews247
http://www.wcpo.com/dpp/news/region_central_cincinnati/sharonville/racial-slur-on-motel-guests-tv
SHARONVILLE, Ohio - Motel 6 issued a statement after a Dayton man says a racial slur showed up on the TV in his room in Sharonville.
Joseph Ross said a racial slur appeared on the television in his Motel 6 room on Hauck Road in Sharonville after he checked in Friday evening.
"I turned the TV on and when I laid back on the bed I just happened to see something on the screen and I was like, 'aww that ain't there, so then I focused my eyes and I couldn't believe what was on there,'" Ross said.
After Ross saw the message, he called the Motel 6 corporate office, as well as the Dayton chapter of the NAACP.
"To my amazement I actually witnessed with my own eyes 'Hello (racial slur) exclamation point,'" said Derrick Forward, President of the Dayton chapter of the NAACP.
Ross was in the area to attend the Macy's Music Festival. Forward thinks the timing of the message is no coincidence.
"For a guest to come to your hotel, turn on the TV during a Macy's jazz festival, that's predominately African-American that attend this event, to say 'Hello (racial slur)' what kind of welcome is that?" Forward said.
Motel 6 issued the following statement on Saturday:
"At Motel 6, we are proud of the great diversity of the guests that we serve, and we are completely appalled by the offensive slur that appeared on our guest's television screen Friday. We are investigating to determine how this mishap occurred, and after inspecting other rooms this appears to be an isolated incident."
Dog owner: Neighbor slit dog's throat to stop barking

http://www.wbtv.com/story/19069915/dogs-throat-slit-to-stop-barking?utm_source=moreToExplore&utm_medium=rec&utm_campaign=content
ROME, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Braveheart the dog is living up to his name. He is recovering from surgery to repair a slit throat.
Cathy Roth of the Animal Rescue League of Northwest Georgia saved Braveheart from a local county shelter.
"The story I got when I picked him up from the shelter was the neighbors had been complaining that he barked so much and their belief is one of the neighbors slit his throat," Roth said.
Roth said she also gained access to a discussion on Facebook where Braveheart's owner confirmed that as well.
"It's beyond horrifying to me," Roth told CBS Atlanta News.
The dog's throat was slit open on Sunday night. The owner apparently couldn't pay for surgery and gave the dog to a county animal shelter.
"The trachea was exposed and all the other structures were exposed. Luckily, there was no damage to any of them, which is why he was able to live," Roth said.
Braveheart underwent surgery Wednesday morning. Thursday night, he was doing great and even jumping for a squeaky toy. He was also enjoying licking people.
"He's such a sweet and loving dog," Roth said.
It's not clear if Braveheart will ever be able to bark again, but he did make several whimpering sounds on Thursday.
Roth said she's having difficulty finding a law enforcement agency that will investigate the case. The Animal Rescue League of Northwest Georgia is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Donations to help cover Braveheart's vet bills can me made directly to the Whatley-Kinney Veterinary Clinic at 415 Plainville Rd. NE, Rome, 30161. Their phone number is 706-291-4587.

Riverdale pizza man saves teen from drowning
http://www.facebook.com/HoodNews247
http://www.cbsatlanta.com/story/19126968/pizza-delivery-man-saves-teen-from-drowning
RIVERDALE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A pizza delivery man is credited with saving a teen from drowning at a Riverdale apartment complex Thursday night.
Mack McKinney works for Pizza Hut and was delivering an order at the Willow Way Apartments. He said when he drove in, people were waving frantically. He said he was not expecting what happened next.
"I opened the (car) door and the lady was like, 'Do you swim?' and I was like, 'Yeah, I swim.'"
A 13-year-old girl was at the bottom of the pool. Several people said she was there for five minutes. McKinney said there were lots of adults around, but apparently no one could get her out.
McKinney jumped in. He said he didn't think until he hit the water.
"I haven't done that (swimming) in like a minute, so when I jumped in, I was like, 'Whoa I forgot how to do this.' But then it snapped in and I got her out," said McKinney.
He pulled the teen out of the water and a woman who was a nurse performed CPR. The paramedics then arrived and rushed her to the hospital.
The teen was taken to Southern Regional Medical Center and then taken to by helicopter to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, where she was in stable condition Thursday night.
McKinney went back to delivering pizzas.
"I mean, I don't consider myself a hero. You know, I am a normal citizen, you know what I am saying, doing what I feel like most people would have done," said McKinney.
It is still unclear what led up to the girl being at the bottom of the pool.
Rachet dirty dog cop tasers innocent 12 y/o black girl
http://www.facebook.com/HoodNews247
Police have declared war on the people.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/01/dejamon-baker-taser-victorias-secret_n_1729527.html?utm_hp_ref=crime
A 12-year-old girl was Tasered by a police officer inside a Victoria's Secret store in St. Louis last week.
The officer says that the girl, Dejamon Baker, was physically interfering and refusing to back away as he attempted to arrest her mother, Charlene Bratton, according to KSDK. He had approached Bratton because she had several outstanding warrants for unresolved traffic tickets, the station reported.
During the arrest attempt, Baker, along with another unidentified female, "charged the officer," according to the St. Louis County Crime Report published on Patch. He ultimately arrested Bratton, Baker, and the third female, though only the 12-year-old was subjected to the electrical shock. It's unknown what charges they face.
Baker now has a small wound on her chest and another on her stomach. She and her mother both deny that the girl was a threat to the officer.
"He should have had enough control to tell her to get back instead of pulling out his gun, I guess he was nervous or whatever, and tasing people," Bratton said. She plans to have the incident investigated.
This hasn't been the only recent controversial use of a stun gun. In June, Chicago police drew criticism after allegedly stunning a woman who was eight months pregnant, and in March, an Ohio police department was shut down after an officer allegedly used a Taser on a nine-year-old.

Vermont farmer crushes 7 police cars with tractor over pot arrest
http://www.facebook.com/HoodNews247
http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/08/02/vermont-farmer-crushes-7-police-cars-with-tractor-over-pot-arrest/
A Vermont farmer used his tractor to crush seven Orleans County Sheriff's Department squad cars on Thursday because he was angry about being arrested on marijuana charges last month. "It's more than half our fleet," Chief Deputy Sheriff Phil Brooks explained to the Burlington Free Press. "We have 11 cars." Roger Pion, 34, allegedly flattened five marked cruisers and two unmarked vehicles, including a van used for transporting prisoners. A car belonging the the department's bookkeeper was also damaged as the tractor pushed it to clear a path to the squad cars. "It was a massive tractor," Newport Express Publisher Ken Wells told the Free Press. "It has four six-foot tandem wheels on the back. It was red. It must be at least a 15-ton tractor." "It's pretty much the biggest tractor you can get," Police Chief Seth DiSanto agreed. The suspect ditched the tractor about two miles from the crime scene and then fled on foot before being apprehended, according to WCAX. He has been turned over to the Vermont State Police. Pion was previously arrested on July 3 for marijuana possession and resisting arrest. His court date had been set for next Tuesday.

Authorities in Port St. Joe, Florida say a man charged with a hate crime felt inconvenienced by his arrest because he had "only shot a n*gger."
Walton Henry Butler, 59, was arrested by Gulf County Sheriff's deputies on Monday night for shooting 32-year-old Everett Gant, who is black, in the head with a .22 caliber rifle.
According to a charging affidavit obtained by The Star, Butler had referred to Pamela Rogers' child and other children at his apartment complex with racial slurs.

White scripts and Black Supermen
http://newsreel.org/video/WHITE-SCRIPTS-BLACK-SUPERMEN
Twenty years ago, Marlon Riggs produced an essential documentary critique of the images of African Americans in US television in his award-winning Color Adjustment. Now comes a documentary on representations of Black masculinity in comic books; a popular culture genre which existed before television and whose reach extends into other areas of cultural production such as movies and animated TV series. White Scripts and Black Supermen: Black Masculinities in Comic Books analyzes the subject for the first time and looks at it over a 40 year period.
In a serious, lively and humorous manner, the film examines the degree to which some of the first Black superheroes generally adhered to and were burdened by stereotypes about Black men. However we also witness how some images shifted -- oftentimes clumsily - to reflect the changing times. In fact the documentary was formerly entitled Shaft or Sidney Poitier: Black Masculinity in Comic Books to signify two types of characters, one with hyper-masculine urban swagger (Shaft) and one with remarkably "dignified" behavior (Sidney Poitier). Ultimately, it became clear that there was much more "Shaft" than "Sidney Poitier" in these early Black superheroes.
Along with images from the comic books themselves, it features commentary by scholars and cultural critics (Jelani Cobb, Mark Anthony Neal, Sundiata Keita Cha-Jua) producers, writers and artists (Reginald Hudlin, John Jennings, Tony Isabella and the late pioneer Dwayne McDuffie.) They provide tools for critiquing all media as they introduce and analyze the leading Black comic book superheroes of the late 60's to late 70's including Black Panther, the Falcon, John Stewart (the Green Lantern), Luke Cage and Black Lightning.

This is becoming all too common. The dirty dog just committed a blood ritual that its all.

A young African-American man in Jonesboro, AR died of a gunshot wound to the head while handcuffed in the back of a patrol car.
Chavis Carter was arrested for alleged drug possession and for missing a court date on previous drug charges.
Sergeant Lyle Waterworth of the Jonesboro police department claims that despite having been searched and handcuffed before being placed inside of the squad car, Carter somehow managed to shoot himself in the head.
Carter's grieving mother rejects the official police story.
From Addicting Info:
"Carter's mother, Teresa, isn't buying the story. First, she claimed that her son was searched twice. She said that he was left-handed, but was shot in the right temple. She also said that he had called his girlfriend after he got pulled over and told her he'd call her from jail. She believes her son was killed.

Sa-Roc is a clear definition of what hip-hop used to be like. She has a new genre also is called God Hop. The energy, you could feel the message from the song. Sa-Roc the emcee hails from the southeastern area of Washington DC, a city that's a mashup of poverty stricken hoods, a strong radical movement, and a fierce loyalty to cultural preservation. This is the cocoon from which Saroc was birthed and bred. Sa-Roc has recorded songs with Jay Electronica, Nappy Roots, Afrika Bambataa and Stic.Man of dead prez. A product of Afrikan-centered parents, Saroc developed a rebel mentality from an early age. She grew up on the music of Jimi Hendrix, Gil Scott Heron, and Earth,Wind & Fire. Her musical soundtrack was a klash of sounds, from gogo, to rock, to hip hop. This foundation began an aural quest for different sounds and concepts in music. It wasn't until 2002, when Sa-Roc met Atlanta producer Sol Messiah, that she began her love affair with the mic. Checkout this stellar performance of her song "Black Moses". @sarocthemc @hoodnews
